St. Mark AME Zion Church in East Chicago is a powerful piece of architecture with deep cultural roots. Designed in the early 1970s by Wendell Campbell, its bold triangular form was inspired by praying hands, an enduring symbol of faith, unity, and strength.
Campbell was a trailblazing Black architect who helped shape the built landscape of cities like Chicago, Detroit, and New Orleans. He was also a mentor, advocate, and powerful voice for diversity in design.
Around 20 years ago, Korellis had the opportunity to install a new roof on this architecturally complex and historically significant structure. We take great pride in helping preserve buildings that are more than just structures. They are part of the story of the communities they serve.
On Juneteenth, we reflect on the importance of honoring the past while continuing to build for the future. Today we celebrate Wendell Campbellโs legacy and the spaces that continue to inspire.
